alwar kameez is one of the beautiful traditional wears of South Asian women. It is said to be originated from Punjab (India). With time, this traditional North Indian dress went on to cross all geographical borders and now its an insatiable wardrobe requirement of all Indian women as a part of their casual and party wear. It has seen so many diversions and innovations with changing fashion. Lets have a peek into the world of Salwar Kameez patterns that are most loved and worn these days.
Traditional Punjabi Salwar Kameez
This is the most traditional pattern of Salwar Kameez in which knee length kameez or tunic usually has long sleeves. The side seams of the dress are open from the just around the hip which gives the ease of movement. The Kameez ends with a wide border around the bottom circumference called Gher.
The bottom part of the dress is called Salwar which is much like the Pyjama (pajama). This starts with a pleated top, getting wide around the thighs and again narrow around the feet. Again a lot of room for the legs, prominently round the thighs for ease of movement.
Matching dupatta (the long scarf) completes this ensemble.
Patiala Salwar Kameez
The name Patiala is because of its gherdar or rich pleated bottom (pajama) with fitted short length kameez.
This Patiala Salwar has almost double the cloth of a regular salwar to have that heavy pleated style. Starting with a belt around the waistline, the pleats gracefully falls below and finishes narrower around the ankles. Also called the baggy salwar these pleats give this dress a unique elegance and individuality.
Afghani Salwar Kameez
In Afgani Salwar Kameez the kameez is traditionally straight cut, giving a parallel look up to the waist and then widening to a loose circumference bottom. The length usually goes below knee. The salwar, similar to normal ones, is quite loose around the thighs and get narrower near the foot.
Bandhej Salwar Kameez
While Patiala salwar reflects the Punjab royalty, Bandhej Salwar Kameez design showcases the elegance of Rajasthani and Gujarati royals.
All that make it stand apart from all salwar kameez patterns is its bandhej prints. The base is tied and then dyed with many colours resulting into beautiful paintwork with or without creases. The colors are usually vibrant like yellow, violet, red, green blue etc.
Dress wise its a normal salwar kameez style, the uniqueness lies in the delicacy and intricacy of the Bandhani work.
Churidar Salwar
As the name explains, this pattern has come from the word choori meaning bangles. The extreme end crumples resemble to churis or bangles and hence is named Churidar salwar. Churidar pyjamas, unlike salwar, are tight fitting type. You can either give it a straight fit (without churis) namely Aligarhi or a gathered creased Lucknawi fit.
This form has been explored by fashion designers quite a lot and thus is now available with various cuts and patterns.
Anarkali Pattern Kameez
The upper portion of the kameez is called choli and is heavily embroidered and the lower flared portion of kameez is highlighted with beautiful border and kalidar patterns. The current design of Anarkali style of salwar is available in varied prints, materials, embroidery work, designer sleeves and stylish necks. Rich embroidery gives it a very royal, ethnic look.
